Back at the beginning of my writing career, I lived in Minnesota but I was already deeply interested in Italian culture. When I learned that St. Paul used to have a Little Italy (despite being known for a history of Scandinavian immigration), I was intrigued. I pitched this article—a deep dive into the history of Italian immigration to the Midwest and its effect on the food culture there—to a local food magazine called the Heavy Table. Some months and many interviews later, I was able to write this heavily researched article. It was a bit of an outlier in the magazine’s usual repertoire of short profiles of current restaurants, but well received. To this day, it’s one of the things I’m most pleased and proud to have written.
